And if a cause or idea is good enough, it can earn free hosting and enterprise-level support here. So keep in mind: your patronage helps us host new, underfunded non-profits and NGOs, as well as people- and planet-positive small businesses with cash-flow problems, for nothing. DEI ‚til we DIE!
We were online early, and we were optimistic. The Internet was reaching further every year and it looked like the great leveler. The printing press had done something of the same kind: it put the cost of publishing within reach of ordinary people, and the world did not stay the same afterward. We thought this would go further still, and that anyone, anywhere, would end up with roughly the same ability to put an idea (or a product) in front of other people.
A shared culture would follow from that. The borders we had drawn carelessly and then leaned on ever since would start to matter less. And we would get a little better at understanding and accepting each other.
Unfortunately, it didn’t turn out quite like that! But that isn’t stopping us from radically fighting to properly protect, host and otherwise represent a family of radical clients. And we only take on customers we’re comfortable being the ultimate Internet home for. That is the central mission, and we keep leaning into it: to represent faithfully, on a turbulent Internet in a turbulent world, the missions we believe in. We will not be intimidated into censoring a worthwhile idea, and we are still glad to do the work of getting everyone’s message into the public sphere. As though a world like that were ours by right, because we think it is.
If what you have to host could be considered an activist site fighting for democracy and social justice, you’ve come to the right place. Our founder lives in Belgium, and because he’s decided that preserving his original country’s democracy is more important than ever seeing that country again, your site is safe and may even stay up if they try to make you take it down. Whether you’re paying for our top package or resting on the shoulders of our central mission, and whether you’re paying in cash, barter or not at all, you’ll get the same level of support. We pay fair prices for external work. We avoid platforms that don’t match our commitment to the Internet and the wider world when possible. We donate when our situations allow, we donate hosting when they don’t, and for the rest, we love to serve the community at a service level nobody expects. And when not busy serving the planet with appropriate technology solutions, we stay active in our physical communities by always voting and participating where opportunities present themselves. We live in the acknowledgment that together, we are greater than the sum of our parts. And that’s how we give back to the best of our abilities.
Our biggest side project right now is Green Cycles, with which we hope to present humanity with an alternative to paving the earth and eliminating nature in favor of loud, polluting, demanding, and resource-heavy datacenters. We are pleased to be bolstered by the rules of the EU where it’s now required both to label AI creations and to produce the environmental impact reporting we will be generating as a central part of the product. Even if ours isn’t the version that gets widely used, we’ll be satisfied with having introduced the idea. Stay tuned for all of that!
Meanwhile, we’ll keep doing what we do, while using bath water free of environmental contaminants to water our organic garden.
