Sustainable Hosting was founded in 2006 by friends who worked in technology, business and sustainability, and who could not find a host they were willing to use themselves or recommend.
Carbon-neutral from the start, and dedicated — as a company and as individuals — to combining serious technology with social and environmental responsibility. The office where most hosting operations have taken place has run on certified renewable energy since 2007.
Our business decisions are made on the same basis as our technical ones. Banking, suppliers, office management: all chosen on values rather than purely on price. Customers have ranged from non-profits on discounted or donated hosting through startups and substantial brands, and the plans run from entry-level shared hosting up to custom dedicated server configurations. The staff has always been small and deliberately so — it is the only way to give the kind of service where we know who you are when you call.
What « sustainable hosting » actually means
The environmental and social effects of the information technology industry are enormous and largely unexamined. Until computers are fully recyclable and compostable, genuinely sustainable web hosting is not possible. We are working toward an ideal that has not been reached, and that will only be reached when enough people insist on it with both their votes and their money.
What we can do in the meantime is make every purchase with its consequences in mind, run energy-efficient servers in renewable-powered datacenters, keep the offices paperless and the electricity clean, and support suppliers and energy providers who are doing the same. Your patronage is what allows us to make those choices, so thank you.
2026: a Belgian company
At the top of our twentieth year we closed the American entity and opened in Belgium. For sustainably-minded and socially responsible businesses, Europe is simply a better place to be — on energy, on data protection, and on the rules about what you are allowed to claim.
For American customers, nothing changed. The US mailing address is still live, and neither operations nor servers moved. The company details and registration are on the legal page.
