Hosting for conscious individuals

Hosting for personal sites and personal email, on renewable power. Your own domain, your own mailboxes, and no advertising business for your data to be useful to.

Your website and your mailbox do not have to be part of somebody else’s advertising business and technological empire.

A personal site. A portfolio. A blog nobody asked for. A family domain with a handful of addresses on it. This is the quietest corner of what we do and one of the parts we would least like to give up — partly because it is where the web started, and partly because these tend to be the nicest conversations we have all week.

Why pay for something that is handed out free?

Because the free version is paid for, just not by you. A free mailbox and a free site builder are funded by knowing things about the people using them, and by making it awkward to leave. We are a hosting company: you pay us for hosting plus occasional advice or updates, and that is the entire relationship. There is no advertising business here for your data to be useful to, because there is no advertising business here at all.

It costs roughly what one streaming subscription does, and in exchange the address is yours. If you ever leave, you take the domain and the mail with you — they were never really ours.

What you get

  • Your own domain, with your own mailboxes on it, rather than an address that ends in somebody else’s company name.
  • WordPress with every feature unlocked (we do not hold things back for a higher tier), or a plain static site if you would rather write it by hand.
  • A free Let’s Encrypt certificate, so the padlock is simply there without you having to think about it.
  • Webmail in the browser, and ordinary IMAP for whichever mail program you already like.
  • Included admin time each month, by appointment, for when something has gone sideways and you would rather ask a person than an AI search engine.
  • Privacy-respecting analytics if you want any at all. A good number of our personal-site customers want none, which is a perfectly sensible answer.
  • Renewable power, from a company that publishes its electricity meter readings rather than its intentions.

What you will not get

  • Marketing email about upgrading. We would rather you stayed on the plan that fits.
  • An « unlimited » claim, on the grounds that nothing truly is.
  • A control panel with forty tabs, thirty-eight of which you would never open.
  • A different account manager every quarter. There are nowhere near enough of us for that.

Common questions

Is this overkill for one small site?

It is the smallest thing we sell, so no. Press ON! is one site and five mailboxes at a fixed yearly price, and it is the plan most of our customers are on. The detail is on plans and pricing.

Can you move my existing site and my old email?

Yes, and the old mail is the part people worry about most. We copy the full history out of every mailbox rather than just the recent messages — we had to get good at that for our own inboxes long before we did it for anybody else’s. See moving your site to us.

Do I need to know how WordPress works?

No, though it helps if you want to write your own posts. If you would rather somebody else built the thing, that is a separate conversation we are happy to have — see web design by humans. If you already have a site elsewhere, we would move it as it stands rather than talk you into a rebuild.

What happens to my things if I stop paying you?

We will save everything until you tell us to stop. After that, you take them. The domain is yours, the site can be exported and the mail can be downloaded. We would rather part on good terms than keep anybody by making leaving difficult. There is a minimum term and a notice period, as there is with most hosting — the specifics are in our terms and conditions.
