Every page view costs energy somewhere. Carbon-neutral hosting means that the energy behind yours is renewable, and that the site has been built to need less of it in the first place.
Elimination before compensation
There is a version of carbon neutrality that is a spreadsheet exercise: measure emissions, buy an equivalent number of credits, print a logo. We did that quite early. First we moved everything onto renewable power… home offices first from 2007, servers as soon as it was possible to rent them. Then came too many panels on the main office, pushing us into carbon-negative territory. Our customers support our ability to pay for them, so in a way, your hosting with us is actually good for the earth.
What you get
- Renewable power end to end, servers and operations alike.
- Optimized stacks: less data transferred means less energy burned.
- Modern TLS, proactive patching, and defaults that are safe rather than convenient.
- GDPR-friendly by construction — no ad tech, no third-party trackers.
- Human help with migrations, DNS, caching and performance tuning.
The technical measures that make “neutral” mean something
- Cache-aware web servers, so pages are not regenerated needlessly.
- HTTP/2 and HTTP/3 where the client supports it.
- Gzip compression, tuned for real-world gains.
- WebP and modern image handling, with offload options for heavy media.
Who this suits
Climate NGOs, eco-commerce, green startups, local cooperatives, and personal sites whose owners simply do not want to make things worse. If sustainability appears anywhere in your own messaging, your hosting is part of that story whether you mention it or not.
Common questions
Is this different from buying offsets?
Yes, and deliberately. We use renewable energy direct to the office when our batteries are empty. When the batteries fill up, we spill excess to the grid, enough to power a regular family home for two months. Offsets no longer come into the equation.
Do you support WordPress?
It is most of what we host. We can set it up any way you like, and suggest further. We are also developing our own carbon-negative engine — stay tuned!
Can you prove the carbon-negative part?
The carbon-negative page sets out the metered import and export figures for 2023 and 2024, taken from the electricity supplier’s own records.
